Foster Care Manual: Visitation Policy
This information has been excerpted from materials specific to one state. Be sure to check with your Foster Care Specialist for details in your state, county, or province.
Client supervisors schedule the visits. Provider parents must insure that the schedule is understood and that clients arrive on time. Provider parents are free to leave the visitation facility as soon as the Agency staff arrive and clients are turned over to them.
Clients are in placement because their parents need help in learning how to raise their children in a safe and healthy environment. They need help, not criticism. Provider parents must be very aware of attitudes and conversation.
Clients are not to be brought for visits when they are seriously ill. If provider parents feel that their client is too ill to visit, they are to notify their client supervisor and report such. A decision will be made by the Agency staff and a physician, if needed, as to whether the child should visit. If the client is ill, the visit may possibly be held in the provider home. If a visit must be cancelled, visitors need to be notified as soon as possible to prevent an unnecessary trip.
Provider parents are responsible for alerting client supervisors regarding any information which would be helpful for training biological parents or other prospective caregivers. Provider parents are often in the best situation to provide such information.
Provider parents are responsible for assisting in any way in meeting the goals for their clients. These goals are established during the development of the treatment plans. Insure that the goals are understood and that every effort is made to meet them.
